If you’re a breastfeeding mom 🤱🏼 you’ve likely experienced a variety of pain associated with it…for the first few weeks I was expecting breastfeeding to be uncomfortable, but then my body kept surprising me with different kinds of breastfeeding aches & pain. 😵 One of the worst was a clogged milk duct that turned into mastitis. AUW!
• If you’re like me, you’re willing to do almost anything to alleviate this pain. A few people (friends, lactation consultants, and yes...mommy blogs) told me that taking a lecithin supplement 💊 could help prevent plugged milk ducts. So of course I tried it. Yup, without digging into the research because I was desperate. Here is what I want you to know before going down the same path as me. • What is lecithin❓It’s a combination of multiple types of phospholipids (these are critical components of your cells). In food, lecithin is commonly found in egg yolks 🍳, fish 🐠, milk 🥛, seed oils, and soy beans. You’ll frequently see “lecithin” on food labels because as an ingredient it’s used to emulsify fat (meaning it’s more easily dispersed in water). • Does this actually work for preventing clogged milk ducts ⁉️ Well, from my experience I'll say no. And there is no data that shows taking high-doses of lecithin can help. 📊 • Bottom line: Lecithin is usually well tolerated and considered to be "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) by the FDA. If you decide to try a lecithin supplement, remember that for supplements in the 🇺🇸, manufacturers are responsible to ensure the safety but do not need to prove the safety and effectiveness before they are marketed. So double check the label to make sure that the ingredients are what you’re hoping they should be. • Pictured 📷: things that actually have helped me overcome clogged milk ducts.
