Vitamin D is important for you, me, and our little ones. Most of us are not meeting the Vitamin D recommendations, in part because there are not that many foods which are a good source of vitamin D plus we’re not getting enough UVB rays ☀️ from the sun…especially here in Chicago where we’re at a higher latitude, staying inside, and bundled up. ❄️ See this previous post to learn more about vitamin D for adults.
• Just like VitaD is critical for you and me, it's also very important for our infants to support their growth and development. 👶🏼 If babies don’t get enough it could lead to rickets – a condition where bones get soft and weak. • To help ensure that your baby is set up for success, follow the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendation¹ (as well as the brand new USDA Dietary Guidelines²) by giving your little guy or girl 400 IU of vitamin D per day for their first year of life. • From 2015-2016 only 2️⃣8️⃣% of infants met this reco³ but it’s simple to help set your baby up for success, here is how: offer full feeds of formula that has vitamin D added to it, daily vitamin D supplements for baby, or a high dose supplement for mom. • Some formula 🍼 contain enough vitaD (not all formulas, so make sure to double check the label and ensure your baby gets a full feed). If you’re breastfeeding then your baby is not getting enough vitaD, regardless of whether you are taking a vitamin D supplement (unless mom is taking nearly 10x the recommendation, around 6400 IU per day⁴. Thats a lot.) • There are many types of vitamin D you can choose from, some will require one drop, others may need a few drops to get one serving, some come with a pipette…bottom line, make sure you read the label to figure out how much and how to best give this to your baby. Our favorite is @BioGaia which also contains the right amount of the specific strain of probiotic (L. reuteri DSM 17938) which has been shown to reduce the amount of crying/fussiness in babies experiencing colic.⁵ • 💡 Pro Tip: If you have an HSA/FSA account make sure to use this 💵 -- 1.
