Matcha 🍵 is a popular tea and flavor that we’re seeing more and more of, and I don’t think this trend is going away any time soon. But what exactly is matcha ⁉️
• Matcha is made from green tea leaves 🍃. About 20 days before harvesting, the plants 🌱 are covered. By limiting their exposure to the ☀️, the rate of photosynthesis lowers. This creates the sweet and umami flavor that we know. • The leaves are then harvested and almost immediately steamed ♨️shortly to help retain their green color 💚. They are then cooled, dried, and eventually ground into a powder. Tada…that’s matcha. • Do you steep it like regular tea? ❌ • To make a matcha you put some matcha powder in a cup. Add a little bit of hot 💧to make a paste. Add a little more water and use a bamboo whisk (called a chasen) to vigorously make a W-shape back and forth until the tea is frothy. • What does the science say about matcha? • Source of antioxidants? ✅ Matcha does contain more antioxidants (specifically called catechins) than regular tea. This is because your consuming more of the leaves since it’s a powder. However, there is not enough science that has looked at the health benefit of matcha specifically. • Source of L-theanine to help alleviate stress? ❌ There is not enough data to support any claims about L-Theanine helping reduce your stress. • Source of caffeine? ✅ Matcha contains more caffeine than tea, about 70mg of caffeine per cup (of course varied based on the type of matcha you’re using and how it was made). According to the USDA Dietary Guidelines, healthy adults can safely consume up to 400mg of caffeine a day. • #DrinkTea #NoshItFoodFacts © Elieke Kearns, PhD, RD and Nosh.it Food Facts, 2021.
