Haven’t heard of the popular Netflix documentary called Game Changers ⁉️ Here is what you did (not) miss: For nearly 1.5hrs you’re watching UFC Fighter James Wilks go on a journey to figure out whether a plant-based diet is ideal to help him recover from an injury. His conclusion is that eating animal products ( meat, 🐟, eggs, dairy) can negatively impact athletic performance, ♥️ health, sexual health, and increase risk for death. ⠀ •⠀ Here is my take ➡️ this is a well-made 🎥 using catchy little experiments that creatively show the audience wow-worthy outcomes but these are not scientific studies and definitely not experiments we should use as the basis to change our eating behavior. When it comes to the “scientific facts” that were shared, a lot of them were wrong or taken out of context.⠀ •⠀ Can a plant-based diet be healthy? ✅ But please eat a wide variety of plant protein sources (grains + legumes) and pay extra attention to vitamins B12 and D, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids because these nutrients can be hard to get enough of without eating animal products.⠀ •⠀ Can an omnivore diet be healthy? ✅ But please pay attention to eating enough fruits, veggies, and choose lean protein sources.⠀ •⠀ One of the arguments in the 🎥 is that you need to look at the whole food. Great point, let’s looks at the essential nutrients that some animal products provide in addition to their high quality protein… Milk:vitamin D & calcium. Eggs: one of the best sources of choline. Fish: omega-3 fatty acids.⠀ •⠀ Bottom line: Protein is a major component of all cells in our body - it doesn’t matter whether you get it from 🐄 or 🌱 sources, your body will break them both down into amino acids. Stay tuned for more on amino acids, they deserve their own post.⠀ •⠀ ⚠️If this movie inspires you to include more 🌱 in your diet, that is great. We could all benefit from that…currently only 12% of 🇺🇸adults meet the recco's for fruits and 9% for veggies.¹ HOWEVER, if you enjoy 🍖🍳or 🍣 , do not let this movie wrongfully influence you into a drastic lifestyle change. #NoshItFoodFacts⠀ __⠀ ⠀ ¹ CDC MMWR.
