Everything "plant based"🌱 has been increasing in popularity and is expected to remain a food trend in 2020.
• “Oat milk” vs. “Oat Beverage” – what’s the deal⁉️ The word "milk" is defined by the FDA and states that it has to come from a 🐄. When “oat milk” is used on a products label, consumers might be misled to believe that this drink is nutritionally equivalent to dairy milk, which is not the case. • 1 cup of 1% cows 🐮 milk¹ provides: 102kcal, 8g protein, 2g fat, 12g carbs, 0g fiber, 0g added sugar + a good source of 9 essential nutrients (calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus, protein, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B12, & Vitamin A). • 1 cup of oat 🌱 beverage² provides 110kcal, 2g protein ⬇️, 2g fat ↔️, 22g carbs ⬆️, 3g fiber ⬆️, 4g added sugar ⬆️, not a good source of any vitamins/minerals ⬇️. • Bottom line: For essentially the same amount of calories, 1 cup of cow 🐮 milk is going to provide you a more nutrient dense option. If you prefer the taste of oat beverage/milk then by all means, go ahead and enjoy it! If you’re not following a vegan lifestyle, don’t have a milk protein allergy, and are looking for a drink that can help you get more protein, vitamins, & minerals then I’d suggest sticking with regular cows milk. #NoshItFoodFacts _____ ¹ USDA FoodData Central Database. “milk, low fat (1%)" Food code: 11112210 ² Trader Joe's. “Non-Dairy Oat Beverage” © Elieke Kearns, PhD, RD and Nosh.it Food Facts, 2021.
